O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

Shakespeare on the Lawn Presents Romeo and Juliet June 13 to 17, 2018

DES MOINES, Iowa (May 9, 2018) – The Salisbury House Foundation is pleased to present its annual ‘Shakespeare on the Lawn’ at the Salisbury House on June 13 through 17, 2018. Iowa Stage Theatre Company will perform William Shakespeare’s most famous play, Romeo and Juliet, with the stately Salisbury House gardens, terrace and balcony as the backdrop.

“If you have not been to one of our Shakespeare on the Lawn performances, this is the one to see,” explained Kit Curran, Salisbury House Foundation executive director. “Through the costumes and the acting, the meaning behind this famous play comes to life for the audience.” Nightly performances will take place at 7:30 pm with gates opening at 6:00 pm for seating. Guests are welcome to bring picnic baskets, blankets and their own chairs. Chairs will be provided, also. Seating is first come, and blanket seating is limited.

“There are several famous duels in Romeo and Juliet,” explained Shawn Wilson, Iowa Stage Theatre Company member. “To prepare we hired Fight Choreographer, Brandon Brockshus, to assist with training our actors.” Brockshus is a Recognized Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD) actor/combatant with proficiency in six weapon disciplines.

Salisbury House is coordinating pop-up performances later in May. The first one will be at the Arts Festival in Valley Junction on May 20. Actors will be walking the streets between 11 am and 1 pm showcasing duel scenes for passersby.

“Shakespeare, the most popular playwright in England in his time, and maybe ever, has a timeless literary appeal that we want to be synonymous with Salisbury House,” explained Curran. Within the Carl Weeks’ rare books library, you will find the 1632 Second Folio of Shakespeare’s works, a 1681 copy of Othello and a 1703 copy of Hamlet.

SPECIAL NOTE: Salisbury House is thrilled to have the support of the George and Kathleen Kochheiser Family Foundation as the presenting sponsor of 2018’s Shakespeare on the Lawn event. Especially, since George and Kathleen met during a Shakespeare class at Drake University in 1947. They married between their junior and senior years of college on July 25, 1948 and were married for 66 years. Their love for the arts, education and reading makes for a perfect fit in supporting Shakespeare on the Lawn.

To purchase tickets, please go to www.salisburyhouse.org or call 515-274-1777. General admission is $30, with discounts available for students and Salisbury House Members. Proceeds from Shakespeare on the Lawn benefit Salisbury House Foundation’s educational and cultural programming.
