Guided Tours

Take a trip across the globe and through time
Learn how this “American Castle” was designed, constructed, and furnished in the 1920s; operated as an office space during the 1950s; and developed into the cultural destination it is today. Since Salisbury House was originally a private residence, guided tours offer a unique insight into the lives of the Weeks family who built the home before, during, and after their occupancy. For those who love the personal anecdotes that are history, this is the ideal way to experience the estate.

Guided tours take approximately 75 minutes with no breaks throughout. Tours are subject to availability and limited to ten people. Tickets close two hours before each tour; email us or call the museum front desk at (515) 274 - 1777 ext. 106 to ask about walk-in availability.

Self-Guided Tours

Explore 500 years of American and European history
Immerse yourself in the Weeks family’s vision of old-world aesthetics and modern luxuries. As you move about the first and second floors of the home, you will see their original collection of antique furniture, modern and classical art, knick-knacks gathered from travels across the globe, and architectural salvage sourced from the Salisbury-Wiltshire area of England. This is the perfect option for families and first-time visitors looking for an adaptable and personal experience.

The average self-guided guest spends one hour exploring the home. Self-guided tours are available whenever the museum is open with last entry one hour before close. Self-guided tickets close daily at 9:00 AM; walk-ins are always welcome.

Private & School Tours

Have a one-of-a-kind experience at a national treasure
Private tours make for fun-filled field trips, exciting club outings, unique conference experiences, and unforgettable family gatherings. Private tours operate similarly to guided tours, but have the flexibility of being tailored to the needs of your group. Bringing a college-level architecture class? We’ll focus on the design and construction process of the home. Is your daughter’s girl-scout troop working on a women in history badge? Then we’ll spend extra time on Edith, her life, and her influence on the estate. Let us know if there is something specific you would like to learn, and we’ll happily accommodate as best we can.

Private tours are subject to availability, but can be booked for any day of the week and at any time of day (an after-hours fee will be applied to tours that run outside of regular office/museum hours). Private tours must be booked a minimum three weeks in advance.

Private tour groups should expect to spend 90 minutes on the property. The maximum number of guests that can tour at once is 45 - groups larger than this can be split into multiple time slots.

Payment & Pricing

Your total amount due will be finalized two weeks before your tour date when your group size is confirmed. Payment will be due before the start of your tour and can be paid upon arrival. Your tour will not start until you have paid in full. Payment can be made in cash, by check (payable to the Salisbury House Foundation), or by credit card with an added 3% convenience fee.

Ticket pricing is determined by the age of the individuals in the group and whether the group is being offered an Educational Tour. Educational Tours are defined as tours being provided to public schools, private schools, or homeschool groups regardless of age level and including college students. Educational Tours also extend to student clubs and other clubs/organizations focusing on youth enrichment (such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Boys & Girls Club, etc.).

Rescheduling & Canceling

If you need to cancel or reschedule your tour, please notify us as soon as possible. Tours can be rescheduled to a later date depending on availability within the Salisbury House calendar.
